My point is that we eat and drink to excessive and totally unnatural amounts foods which may in moderation be healthy or at least not harmful to our systems. But more often than not, once you have tried a food once you find you want to eat or drink more of it. Frankly, carp and other omnivorous and carnivorous and even certain vegetarian fish species of fish do fall for such similar effects from bait substances.
Sometimes it is not an extra powerful refined additive that makes all the difference in a modern fishing bait. Very often it is the way a natural substance particularly rich in an essential nutrient in the fishs diet, can reap results. A salty mouthful of fresh mussel on the hook is a very basic example, but most carp and catfish baits are more than just natural baits used directly on the hook.
These modern recipes and bait formulas are far more often a scientifically based potent cocktail of substances designed to hit fish in many different ways and not just simply via their taste and smell organs and systems; but in far more profound ways too! If you were to make a fishing bait and it only consisted of wheat, milk, sugars, alcohol or other solvent based flavours, salts, and unsaturated fatty acids (oils forms,) you will not go wrong; and in effect you will be making habit-forming baits...
Not; this totally ignoring other well-known bait ingredients such as those high in stimulatory amino acids, like the protein ingredients and additives, etc. Curries herbs and spices contain many other such bioactive substances for example. Speeding up rate of digestion and making fish release more energy is if vital significance in the great effects of many baits and this avenue is only one kind of impact of many to exploit in your baits and ground baits.
Now if I eat anything that involves any high density lipoprotein (or so-called bad cholesterol such as saturated fats,) I ensure I eat something to break this down or at least speed up my rate of digestion and metabolism. Many low density lipoproteins or so-called healthy cholesterol such as the unsaturated fatty acids (forms of oils,) are of extremely great significance in carp and catfish fishing baits for example.
But along with providing energy, many fisherman overlook the really seriously important bioactive effects of such potent antioxidant containing substances. Many oils contain growth factors, some as yet unexplained by science. Many boost the immune system and enable better functioning of the heart and liver and circulation for instance, which leads to elevated energy potential and better balanced health in the fish among many effects. These might seem unimportant, but when you are pitted against competing baits, these things really make all the difference to your results.
Another habit-forming substances is alcohol; which is a well known fishing flavour component. Many alcoholic beverages contain very high levels of sugars and this is not very obvious to many heavy drinkers who strangely become themselves very heavy over time... The effects of the lupulins (the bioactive substances in beer hops for instance,) have similar physiological effects to those of nicotine when smoking a cigarette, so craving to have any of these in a combination is not so surprising. Many smokers feel the need for a cup of coffee while smoking, for related reasons!
Sweeteners in carp fishing are well proven to extend feeding times and duration and encouragements of actual continued bait consumption. Palatability is extremely important in carp baits; but this does not mean at all that you as a human will actually enjoy the taste or smell or an outstanding bait!
Most top bait makers will exploit as many avenues of exploitation as possible. This is because they know that once carp get used to the smells, tastes and internal impacts of all theses substances combined, they will more than likely accept them far more readily as regular food; and this really can equal amazing catches!
One angle if you like is the exploitation of specific oils and combinations of these oils in fishing baits. It is natural for animals to gorge on fat (and sugars) because it is the most energy-efficient direct source of fuel energy for the body metabolism that keeps us alive! Fish actually need it to survive, and carp and other fish farmers will use a minimum of about 5 percent fat (fatty acids of low density lipoprotein forms) in the feed.
Often much elevated levels are used to provide the energy for fish to grow to maximum weights as fast as possible for profit. The vacuum added oils in the high oil popular halibut marine pellets used in carp fishing are one obvious example! (Carp and catfish and other fish growth rates have risen as a result of such feeds but often at the cost of winter fishing results! )
I might add that many low fat foods have elevated levels of sugars, or artificial sweeteners, or added wheat flour, or casein, or some flavour components to still get that vital edge over you which consumed in large doses for years is certainly not ideal for you health.
Another great example in fishing bait ingredients (apart from milk products,) is that of wheat and wheat products. If you have never questioned why a fish will consume a ball of wheat flour (or semolina for instance) then this all might be very stimulating indeed...)
Often you just cannot seem to find anything in a shop with it or a food not made in a factory using wheat. This too has habit-forming substances and again can cause allergies and harmful effect on the body due to long-term over-eating of it. The very potent taste-enhancer monosodium glutamate (or MSG,) may be extracted from wheat too and this is also telling... (Wheat is most often sold in conjunction with salt and sugar and this is well worth noting in regards fishing baits principles too...)
Next lets just consider yeast extract; it seems to be used in foods for no apparent reason but this is so far from the case; even just the salt, betaine and glutamic acid content are extremely significant, among many other factors too! When you look at a packaged food, the most abundant ingredient will be listed first, followed by those included in lower levels, until you reach those substances found in the smallest traces. These are often the ones you might want to study most of all; and Ive been doing this for over 30 years alongside my bait-making and bait designing investigations of my own!
